A ROW is brewing over the erection of bus shelters in Tobago.
TnT Mirror was tipped off about the issue by a disgruntled community
activist in the southwestern end of the Sister Isle.
“For
years we have been making representations for bus shelters at the
intersection of Milford Road and Shirvan Road,” said the activist.
“We were able to secure sponsorship from Angostura
to erect and maintain two elegantly designed bus shelters for the
area late last year.
“We sought and received permission
from the Secretary of Works and Transport Witney Alfred through our
Area Representative Albert Pilgrim.
“With everything
in place to get the project off the ground, we received a letter from
Alfred dated July 27 rescinding the permission that was granted previously
to erect the shelters,” cried the activist.
“He
is claiming that his Division has been mandated to erect all bus shelters
throughout the length and breadth of the island, so the offer from
Angostura cannot be accepted,” the source reported.
This decision has not gone down well with the community and the activist
has vowed to take the matter further to ensure that the people of
the area get the benefit of a fully sponsored bus shelter.
