Senator Dana Seetahal has collected more than One million dollars
from the State for her services as an attorney.
According to a report of the Auditor General On the Public Accounts
for the Financial Year 2005 (October 2004 to September 30), Seetahal,
who was recently given “silk” (senior counsel) was paid
a total of $869,255.
She is the only Member of Parliament to be paid out of public monies,
the report noted.
Senator Seetahal collected $197,628 as professional fees for services
provided: Extradition of Olive Enya Hooma-el (also called Lancelot
Small).
For appearing in the Habeas Corpus Action between Small and the
Commissioner of Prisons, she was paid $156,597.
The female SC was also paid $ 110,000 as professional fees for services
provided re: Bail application in Extradition of Ronald Rakal, Hafeez
Mohammed et al, December 22, 2004 (drug trafficking case), according
to the report.
Seetahal was paid $28,000 when she appeared on behalf of the State
in the case against Derek Perpignac a.k.a. Anthony Muge a.k.a. Anthony
Hills, between November and December 2004.
For her appearance in the murder trial of professor Dr. Vijay Naraynsingh,
Seetahal got $40,000 and she was paid a retainer fee by the Director
of Public Prosecutor’s Office last year which amounted to
$337,000.
The report did not cover Seetahal’s appearing for the Sate
in the sedition charge against Jamaat al Muslimeen leader Imam Yasin
Abu Bakr’s case some six months ago, which can also run into
more than $200,000. |
