“I
have seen them with my own eyes,” the resident insisted.
Yet another resident opined that it was not fair because the whole
concept behind the Sou Sou lands project, which was conceived by
the former National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) Government,
was one of self help and community empowerment.
“The NAR started this project, even while they were in opposition,
where low cost serviced plots were provided for poor people to build
their homes using the ‘lend hand’ concept,” related
the resident.
“Some of us bought plots at $7,000 to $9,000 per lot, and
we all struggled and helped each other to build our homes,”
the source stated.
“This politician and relative already have a big house at
another location, so why are they building another,” queried
the resident.
Another concerned resident slammed the overall lack of housing in
Tobago since the Peoples National Movement (PNM) took over the administration
of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).
“When they came into office over five years ago, the PNM promised
to build low-cost houses for Tobagonians.
“They even criticised the NAR for selling serviced plots in
Signal Hill at $7 per square foot instead of $5, which they stated
was national policy,” the resident noted.
“They promised to provide serviced lots and houses but so
far they are yet to deliver on their promises at a time when the
country is awash with money,” cried the resident.
“All they are doing is fixing up themselves real nice,”
declared the resident. |
