WITH
the general election due within one year, the testy issue of campaign
finance will surface in the House of Representatives, again.
This time, it comes in the form of a private motion which is likely
to be dated on June 23, which is the Private Member’s Day
in the House of Representatives.
The motion, which is already filed with the Clerk of the House by
Caroni East MP, Ganga Singh, calls for special select committee
of the House to look at the whole area of financing of political
parties and campaign financing in TnT.
Singh’s motion contends that there is no present legislative
framework regarding the registration of political parties or the
disclosure, by the political parties, of contributions made to them
by individuals or corporations.
“It is an issue of how do you deal with evolving democracy
in the context of large conglomerates and people with money who
will capture your party as well as the drug money influence,”
the Caroni East MP told TnT Mirror last week.
Indeed it would be interesting to see whether the former chief whip
will use the motion as an excuse to lambaste the “cabal”;
in the United National Congress (UNC), and discuss all kinds of
tricky issues relating to who’s funding the party now! |
