Mirror’s Tobago Correspondent Derson Charles was on the receiving
end at a gala awards ceremony held to mark the 90th Anniversary
of the John Roberts Memorial Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Primary
School in Glamorgan last Sunday.
Charles received an award for his contribution to the development
of education in the village as the second longest serving principal
of the school.
It was under his tenure that the school building was constructed
from foundation to finish.
The function, which was held at the newly-commissioned community
centre, was organised by the SDA church school, to recognise and
honour all who had contributed to the dream of “Christian
education” by its founder, the late Pastor John Roberts.
Present at the event was Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary
Orville London as well as the Area Representative Wendell Berkley.
London urged the SDA community to emulate the qualities of the man
John Roberts.
“He not only had a dream but he had the courage to implement
that dream,” said London.
“These are the kind of qualities that must be emulated by
all, who are inspired to follow in his footsteps,” he declared.
London also stressed the important role of church schools in TnT
to advance moral and spiritual values in keeping with the ideals
of the Christian community in the country, in a world where other
religious influences are gaining prominence.
Among the individuals to receive life-time awards for outstanding
contribution to the development of the only primary school in the
village were Lenna “Teach” Delancy as the oldest serving
teacher/principal of the school and Dr. Neomi Modeste a former student
of the school who is now a Professor at Loma Linda University in
California.
