Joseph really in the dark?

By AZAD ALI
THE police kept National Security Minister Martin Joseph in the dark when they went to arrest Chief Justice (CJ) Sat Sharma at his Fairways, Maraval home last Friday evening.

This is what Joseph wants the nation to believe when he told a post-Cabinet Press conference at Whitehall, Port of Spain, on Thursday that he did not have any prior knowledge of the attempted arrest of Sharma.

Imagine Joseph (with his usual arrogant behaviour) looked straight into the faces of reporters and said neither he nor Prime Minister Patrick Manning was informed by Police Commissioner Trevor Paul of recent moves to arrest the CJ.

His body language showed a bit of uneasiness when he was speaking, one reporter said.

“Would you believe that the police going to arrest the Chief Justice, who holds the highest office in the country and neither Joseph nor Manning is informed?” one officer asked.

One police officer said Joseph should ask the commissioner how come the media arrived minutes after the police went to Sharma’s home and he did not know.

“Is Joseph aware that the prime minister has been keeping in touch with Assistant Commissioner of Police Wellington Virgil (who is heading the Sharma investigation) on a regular basis regarding the matter?” another cop asked.

Joseph should know it is easy to get phone records of calls made by judges and attorneys -- ask Newsday.

Police officers want to know which attorney prepared both statements Paul read to the media when he called two separate Press conferences over the past few days.

One officer observed that Paul was fumbling with some of the legal wording while he was reading his first statement, which is an indication it was prepared by an attorney.

Some other officers claim that Joseph could compete with well-known comedians Learie Joseph, Peter Joseph and Tommy Joseph to provide laughter during this tense period of the crisis in the judiciary.
