Moonilal: I’m waiting for Bas

By CECILY ASSON
A RELATIVELY silent Roodal Moonilal, Member of Parliament for Oropouche has sworn to become more vocal and visible when the real leader of the United National Congress (UNC) former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday returns from his trip abroad.

“He’s expected to be back in mid-July and folks will see and hear much of me.

“I’ve already shared my concerns with him as he’s the only man to bring back order in the party.”

Moonilal was responding to rumours he is to be replaced in his constituency at the next general elections since he is considered to be sitting on the fence.

The concerned members have complained that Dr Moonilal’s deafening silence in the midst of the ruction in the UNC has them uncomfortable.

One faction led by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the other led by Political Leader Winston Dookeran have been at loggerheads for several months now.

Many say Dr. Moonilal who once seemed “independent” but soon changed his position, cannot be trusted, as they believe he can jump ship anytime.

The man tipped to replace him is Dr. Shastri Moonan who was recently appointed to serve in the Senate.

But Dr. Moonilal said he’s not fazed by the rumours that he himself had heard.

He said he was not worried at all.

“But I want to know which seat they are giving him since there are two: Oropouche East and Oropouche West”, laughed Dr. Moonilal.

He said because he didn’t want to become publicly embroiled in the quarrel about the goings on in the party, many people had interpreted him wrongly.

“They feel it’s ambivalence, but they should know that I’m the one who took the petition to the President to have Kamla Persad-Bissessar become Opposition Leader.

“Jack Warner was my driver …”

He said part of the reason for him being quiet, too, is the fact that he has been extremely busy furthering his studies.

Dr Moonilal said he’s also being kept busy with a class of 150 UWI students.

“My workload has been very heavy.”

He said the public should also be aware that he holds no post in the party and he will not step out of his place.

“If they are not hearing me or seeing me it’s because I’m letting those who were appointed to lead, do their job.”

He stressed that he was committed to Panday.

“Tell everybody I’ll be back with Bas,” Dr. Moonilal declared.
