THA
Chief Secretary Orville London made a surprising attempt to play
politics at a hastily arranged THA rally, to pay tribute to TnT
Soca Warriors Captain Dwight Yorke and Cyd Gray at the recently
commissioned Scarborough Esplanade on Milford Road last Monday.
London, during his speech, “tried a t’ing” when
he said he hoped Yorke would choose to be a part of his political
side, whenever he decided to hang up his football boots.
He was at the time expressing his pride at Yorke’s leadership
performance both on and off the field during the World Cup campaign
in Germany.
“We don’t want no politics here!” snapped a female
voice in the crowd, in response to London’s assertion.
Yorke and Gray, the two Tobago members of the history-making Soca
Warriors World Cup 2006 football team were fittingly toasted for
their outstanding contribution to the overall efforts of the team
at its first ever World Cup showing in Germany.
But many Tobagonians were complaining bitterly about their lack
of knowledge of the event.
They claimed that the THA did not do enough to publicise the rally.
As a result, only a small crowd turned up for the celebrations.
One woman told TnT Mirror how disappointed she was, when she heard
about the function after it had passed.
“How could the THA leave us out so?” she fumed.
“We were all so hyped up about the performance of the boys
in Germany and looking forward to greet them whenever they come
back home.
“It jus isn’t fair,” cried the woman.
Grace Yorke and Maude Gray, mothers of the two men were duly recognised
at the rally.
Special mention was also made of the contribution that former national
coach Bertille St. Clair made to the early development of Yorke,
as well as his initial involvement with the team on the road to
Germany.
