“When he first graded it we got our first mud shower, which
never happened before,” explained Sandra Khan, who is feeling
the full brunt of the whole situation.
“The development came to a standstill for a while and a few
years later he graded again and this time the mud situation became
worse,” she further explained.
“Last week, the land was graded again and this time the mud
and slush that came down was worse than ever,” continued Khan
“The man who doing this has no heart.
“If rain falls for two days straight I would have no house,
everything will wash away with the mud,” she added.
The land is cut from near Abu Bakr’s Rich Plane house overlooking
Julien Park.
Khans’ house, along with the other residents of Julien Park,
is a couple of kilometres below the residence of Bakr, who is not
involved in or affected by this project.
The land is said to have been sold by Adrian Piggott.
“The back of my house is a pool of stagnant water with mosquitoes
and tadpoles,” explained Khan.
“I have lived here for 20 years and I have never heard frogs
croak until this development started,” she added.
“And we also have to put up with the stench that the mud brings,”
continued Khan.
“If that stress is not enough, a few days ago I came home
to a shocking surprise in front of the walkway to get to my house
was dug up to make a drain that is doing nothing but collecting
water to make mosquitoes.
“I had to walk through mud, then jump this drain to get to
my house,” she added.
“My husband eventually paid a man to build a makeshift ramp
for us to get to and fro. And we have to pass through mud,”
Khan explained.
“Why should we have to put up with this discomfort because
of a developer who does not care about people?
“I have to leave home in a slippers and a bottle of water
to wash my feet when I am going to work.
“This is ridiculous.”
She claimed the developer would he hard-pressed to prove he has
approval from Town & Country Manning for such amateurish “development”.
The parties came to a head on Monday when the developers broke down
a fence bounding the Khan’s land and fencing in goats.
The animals got away and have since not been seen.
Police were called in to intervene and the Khans have since filed
an injunction preventing the developer from further work near their
property.
Khan’s brother-in-law, Richard Khan, who owns a grocery and
liquor store in Julien Park, is also suffering from the development.
“Is only mud running into my business place and damaging my
goods,” said Richard, following Tuesday’s heavy downpour.
“I lost thousands of dollars in goods just last week,”
he added.
“Everytime the land is graded, the mud situation gets worse,”
he explained.
He told TnT Mirror that he paid several youths to sweep out water
and mud out of his businessplace last week.
“I was forced to buy sharp sand to make sand bags to keep
the water and mud from going,” said Richard.
“I wrote to Mr. Castagne of the Diego Martin Regional Corporation.
“I also wrote to the Environmental Management Authority (EMA)
and to the director of drainage, and up to now I have not received
a reply from anyone.
“This problem is getting worst.
“I am losing money in goods, but my brother and his wife could
lose their lives, if they experience one more pouring of rain, because
their whole house could be washed away,” said Richard.
