Millionaire Soca Warrior to face court
Charged with badly beating uncle

CHACONIA Gold Medallist Jason Scotland, member of the famous Soca Warriors just back from World Cup Finals in Germany after failing to qualify for the second round, is due to appear in Port of Spain Third Magistrate’s Court on July 19 to answer a charge of assault.

Charged along with the recently-made millionaire, who plays for Scottish club St. Johnstone, is his brother Joel Joseph, for injuries occasioned on their 49-year-old uncle Junior Scotland at the family’s Febeau Village, San Juan home about one year ago.

Scotland has never appeared in court since the charge was laid in 2005.

The national footballer returned to TnT, along with the rest of his colleagues to a heroes welcome following their debut performance in a World Cup.

The government and people of TnT rewarded each player of the 24-member team with a million dollars and a national award in a public ceremony at the Hasely Crawford Stadium last Saturday.

Although he travelled with the team to Germany, Scotland didn’t play as he remained on the bench for all three games.

He, however, proved quite a hit in Scotland all because of his surname.

The country Scotland did not make it to the World Cup Finals and so they adopted TnT’s local boy, who they felt gave them a presence in the tournament if only because of his name.

Excited Scottish fans even had a song composed in his name and threw their weight behind team Trinidad and Tobago.

Back home, when the matter Scotland vs. Scotland came up in the Port of Spain Magistrate Court for hearing on January 23, 2006, the footballer failed to appear in court as he had already returned to his premiereship league club.

However, relatives have blamed the inaction on the part of the police to ensure that Scotland put in a court appearance, on the fact the he was involved in the intense campaign on the road to Germany.

Reports made to the San Juan Police Station stated that Scotland’s younger relatives, one armed with a hockey stick during an altercation at the family’s home, allegedly beat Junior into an unconscious state causing him to suffer severe injuries about the body.

He was hospitalised for several days at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), Mt. Hope.

It was a frustrated Junior, who remains under medical care after all these months, who told Mirror he was not happy with the way he was being treated by those involved.

He accused those involved in dragging their feet in the matter.

“Each time the case calls, they allow Jason to leave so the matter was always postponed,” He said.

“I hope to see him in court this time, since justice must be served regardless of status.

Scotland has not yet returned to his foreign club.

Following a hectic World Cup campaign and massive celebrations at home upon their return, Scotland is still at his San Juan home basking in the glory of the Soca Warriors’ spirited performances again tough opponents like Sweden, England and Paraguay.

The Scotlands have reportedly been warring against each other for some time and has a history of charges and counter charges.
