Scotland gets Trini-style thank you

By CECILY ASSON
IT looks like the party for TnT’s most celebrated footballers, the Soca Warriors who are fresh from the 2006 World Cup Finals, in Germany, has only just begun, as word out of Scotland is that the government of TnT, following closely on the heels of the big local return party, has planned another big one out there.

Reports are that the Soca Warriors will say thanks to Scotland with two big cultural fetes to be held in Glasgow’s George Square and Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens on July 15 and 16 respectively.

Popular musicians from TnT along with limbo and other cultural dancers and British-based soca entertainer SW Storm will perform at the venues. Also planned is an official after World Cup party at the Corinthian nightclub, Glasgow, where free glasses of rum punch will be available for the first 300 customers.

According to a William Tinning report in The Herald, the big thank you party is for the unwavering support of the Scottish folks for Trinidad and Tobago during World Cup Finals in Germany.

Soca Warriors bowed out in the preliminary round after giving creditable performances against Sweden, England and Paraguay.

Tinning reported a spokesman for Trinidad and Tobago Tourist Board said: “Having bowed out gracefully from the World Cup, the Soca Warriors, Trinidad and Tobago’s football squad, has helped to put the tiny Caribbean islands well and truly on the map.

“The government of Trinidad and Tobago would like to thank the people of Scotland for their unwavering support and has planned two events in Glasgow and Edinburgh featuring live entertainment by well-known musicians from TnT as a special thank you”.

The article further noted that with Scotland failing to qualify for the World Cup, the Tartan Army got behind TnT in their game against group opponents England.

“Jack Connell, the First Minister, also controversially supported the so-called Soca Warriors against the ‘Auld Enemy’.

“The support north of the border for TnT was due mainly to the fact that several of their players ply their trade in the Scottish leagues, including the aptly named Jason Scotland.”

Tinning wrote: “Trinidad and Tobago flags and bunting were put up at pubs and bars across Scotland in support of the team. Even a CD -- Scotland at the World Cup -- in tribute to the St. Johnstone player was released.”

It is hoped that Falkirk players Russell Latapy, Denzil Theobald and Jason Scotland will attend both events.
