50th anniversary celebrants threaten to teach UNC ’bout propaganda
‘Panday in the garden hiding from the PNM’

By JOELINE THOMAS
PEOPLE’S National Movement (PNM) supporters hit out at United National Congress (UNC) officials at the party’s 50th anniversary celebrations held on Tuesday evening at Woodford Square, Port of Spain.

Roy Joseph, leader of the Couva South PNM contingent, told TnT Mirror that UNC members were instigators of bacchanal and propaganda.

Joseph insisted: “All the UNC likes to do is spread propaganda.”

But he warned: “If they like propaganda, we will teach them propaganda. However, we the PNM, will always lead and the others will follow.

“No other political party in this country could celebrate a 50-year anniversary.

“Look at how many people braved the weather and come out to show their support; no other party could receive that type of response in this bad weather.”

The activist also boasted of the multi-ethnic composition of the PNM.

He said: “Look around the Square and you could see people from all different races gathered here today; we not bias at all.”

The chairman of the Tableland contingent, Olston Hodge, told Mirror that PNM was the only democratic political party in TnT.

He further boasted: “We backing them rain or sunshine; we not leaving Port of Spain until 4 a.m. tomorrow, even if it means we have to sleep on the road.”

There was also a small group of men equipped with two pieces of wood knocking together. A harmonica and a banjo, which formed a rhythm section to pass the time.

The group made up songs like, “Panday in the garden hiding from the PNM”, much to the delight of some passersby.

A member of the three-man band, who gave his name as “Sponge”, joked that he was Prime Minister Manning’s son.

“I have been a PNM supporter ever since I was a little boy and I have no intentions of changing my political preference,” he proudly stated.

Some of the supporters in the Square said the Opposition was trying to spread propaganda on the ruling party because of jealousy, in connection with the Vernon Paul affair.

One of the activists added: “The only persons that could have accessed Opposition Senator Sadiq Baksh’s San Fernando home were those who were familiar with the compound.

“No outsider could have accessed the inner grounds of the compound due to its unique structure and tight security.”
