Calypso then and now...
No dogs or calypsonians allowed!

By SUZETTE EDWARDS-LEWIS
CALYPSO has come a long way from social commentary in the early 1930s, to kaiso, soca, Chutney soca and ragga soca.

Calysonians have also been elevated from being looked upon as scums, to well-respected cultural icons of the land.

The prize money has moved up from $20 first prize to $250, 000 for the Monarch competition.

However, in the early days, according to various ole-time bards, Calypsonians were more united.

“Imagine, we used to put up 25 cents each to buy one jacket, and each one of us would wear that same jacket for our performances,” one of them, Anthony Francis a.k.a. “Almanac”, told TnT Mirror.

“And no one used to notice that it was the same jacket all of us were wearing.”

The blind bard moaned: “Calysonians went through so much trials to be recognised.

“As a matter of fact, there were signs at certain places that said, ‘No dogs or calypsonias allowed’.”
