Another ex-UNC minister facing charges?
Mirror miles ahead

By DAVID MILLETTE (Editor)
ANOTHER former United National Congress (UNC) Minister is facing corruption charges.

That’s the word from sources who said that investigations are almost complete and charges could be laid soon.

And TnT Mirror was told that that could be one of the reasons why ex-“DEA” agent Trevor Paul has suddenly become an issue … once again.

“Initially, we got the impression that the ex-minister got most of what was demanded in cash and that is why there has been trouble to lay corruption charges, so far,” sources told Mirror.

“But we may have finally made a breakthrough.”

Mirror dated August 02, 1985

Mirror was tipped off a few weeks ago about some sudden and strange activities by certain elements.

We began hearing about hurried trips to Venezuela, even by politicians, and attempts to clean up a criminal and made him presentable to the public.

In addition, we were told about all kinds of clandestine meetings being held, and about old contacts being renewed by disgraced politicians, criminals and others.

Then suddenly, well … not so suddenly after all, the so-called Sunday Guardian exclusive about Vernon Paul, which was, in fact, a sort of flip-side to a Sunday Mirror story printed eight, long months ago on May 15, 2005.

And would you believe it, Mirror’s “old” story and not the Guardian’s “exclusive” became the major story of the day.

But is there a link between the Guardian’s side of the story and the pending arrest?

Since its inception in the 1980s, Mirror has built its reputation on breaking the big stories.

From the Bernadette James murder in 1998, when we were the first to report that the WPC was shot in a bus, printing the picture of the bus with its shattered windscreen and all … while the dailies were painting a totally different picture of the shooting, to the illegal drug trade and all the sins of the notorious Dole Chadee and his henchmen, long before he was arrested for murder, we were first.

We exposed the murder of Muslimeen member Abdul Kareem by a policeman in 1985, even printing a picture of him on the ground after he was knifed.

From the details of the Scott Drug Report … long before the report was made public, to the corrupt activities and bad behaviour by politicians in the PNM, NAR, UNC and PNM again, we have kept ahead of the pack.

We were the first to tell the nation that a sitting MP had slapped his secretary during the reign of the NAR.

We were the first to tell the nation in November, 1996 that A.N.R. Robinson will resign as a Cabinet Minister in the UNC Government and be made President.

You name it and we have reported it exclusively, even though we sometimes have to sit on a story for days before we go to Press, while the dailies come out day after day.

Vernon Paul, whichever side of his mouth he is now speaking from, is old news by Mirror’s standard.

We remain miles ahead of the competition.
