TRINIDAD and Tobago’s reigning Chutney Monarch’s arrival on the Solomon Hochoy Highway last Thursday wasn’t met with the accustomed cheers.

Instead, when Heeralal “Hero” Rampartap arrived, there were flowing tears from close friends, relatives and co-workers of a grass-cutter, who only minutes before was fatally knocked down by a vehicle driven by Hero’s son, Kishal Rampartap.

Surujbally Kuarsingh, 44, a father of three from Penal, was cutting the grass on the verge of the northbound lane of the highway

near the Claxton Bay Flyover when a reported run-away vehicle with 22-year-old Rampartap at the wheels slammed into him.

Kuarsingh, a Ministry of Works employee, whose body was thrown 150 feet into the cane field upon impact, died on the spot, while the driver escaped with minor injuries.

While holding his brushing cutlass, wife Domatee Kuarsingh, wailed at the sight of her husband’s lifeless body as it lay in the canefield.

“Ah full yuh belly before yuh leave; look how yuh coming back home to me in a box now,” she cried aloud.

“You should ah stay home, ah would ah mind yuh.”

Unlike Kuarsingh, two of his co-workers were able to scamper to safety.

The grieving family members and friends spared Hero any kind of hostile reaction.

The Chutney king showed total composure and moved through the small crowd, as he recovered his son’s personal belongings and helped to remove parts of the wreckage and secure them.
