Kiwis traditional West Indian fodder

THE West Indies and New Zealand first met in a limited-over match during the semi-final of the 1975 World Cup at the Oval in England on June 18, 1975, when the Windies won by five wickets.

Since then, the teams have met in 35 matches, with the Windies winning 22 the Kiwis ten and the other three were unfinished.

The teams have so far clashed in four World Cup matches, with the West Indies winning in 1975, in 1979 (at Nottingham by 32 runs) and in 1999 (at Southampton – by 7 wickets). The Kiwis’ lone win came at Auckland by 5 wickets in 1992.

The highest-ever total for West Indies is 306 for 6 at Guwahati on November 1, 1994, while New Zealand’s highest is 302-6 at Christchurch on January 11, 2000.

The Kiwis were dismissed for 116 at Port of Spain on April 17, 1985 for the total between the two sides, while West Indies’ 123 at Goa on October 26, 1994 remains its lowest.

In all, 11 hundreds have been scored by West Indian batsmen, while the Kiwis have managed just one (Stephen Fleming’s 106 not out at Port of Spain on March 29, 1996).

Brian Lara’s unbeaten 146 also at Port of Spain on March 30, 1996 is the highest for the Windies.

Former West Indian openers Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes have the distinction of scoring three hundreds each against the Kiwis.

Lara has the highest run aggregate of 905 runs (avg. 56.56) in 22 matches, while Nathan Astle has 584 runs (avg. 34.35) in 19 matches for the New Zealanders.

Both Courtney Walsh and Chris Harris have 21 wickets each in 16 and 19 matches respectively are the top wicket-takers.

Kiwi Scott Styris’ 6/25 in 7 overs at Port of Spain on June 12, 2002 are the best bowling figures, while for the Windies Viv Richards has recorded the best figures 5/41 in 10 overs at Dunedin on March 18, 1987.
