If UWI discriminates against me
... I’m sooking Anand Ramlogan on them

By KHALIL SAIF
PRINCIPAL of the St. Augustine branch of the University of the West-Indies and a founding father of the Principles of Fairness Committee Dr. Bhoe Tewarie has to set the population’s mind at ease by alleviating the misconception that the major criteria for admittance to the institution is not on the presumption of racism or any other form of narrow-mindedness but ascetically on meritocracy.

By now everyone is conscious that I have articulated staid reservations with reference to the document spearheaded by the adhoc committee, which consisted of a group of arm-chair politicians and academics.

Additionally, the gathering of bookish folks did not confer with the masses but instead sought to engage in intellectual masturbation with their professional peers.

Since the Principals of Fairness document emphasises the importance of transparency in public affairs, I believe it’s a good code of behaviour for Bhoe to put into practice what he preaches.

At this point I don’t want to be categorised as pushing a similar head with Dr. Selwyn Cudjoe as our agendas are diametrically opposed and your submissive servant is a featherweight and cannot be classified in the heavyweight intellectual division.

Consequently, whether Tewarie’s contract was terminated or renewed is not my angst, but if the refusal was on the principles of discrimination and was influenced by government interference then Bhoe would have my uncompromising support.

To a certain extent a number of academics are surreptitiously remonstrating the changing face of the campus, as the issue of racism and discrimination are nurturing there ugly head.

Even though it’s ridiculous for lecturers or students to make a direct link to the principal of the institution, nonetheless he has to accept responsibility for any decadence, as it’s his duty to guarantee that his subordinates adhere to the rules and regulations of the tertiary institution.

Similar to most of the other institutions in this plural society the internal politics at the university are usually clouded with a lot of issues but most of the intellectuals are terrified to deal with the veracity of racial pride and racism.

On both sides of the racial divide there are those whose racial pride borders on racism and these idiots gallery themselves pushing a “dotish” head without considering the consequences of their deeds. For far too long the cry of discrimination against Afro-Trinbagonians in a few of the faculties of UWI namely Medicine, Law, Engineering and IOB has fallen on deaf ears.

All the same I find it extremely perplexing that Tewarie has not address this mind-boggling issue by presenting the statistic so as to quell the nation anxiety.

In every nook and cranny on the East/West corridor the cry in town among the African-middle class is that discrimination is alive and kicking on the campus.

Now if Bhoe is playing naive or turning a deaf ear, by refusing to believe that discrimination exist under his stewardship then how would he respond to the fact that a good friend of mine who is a prominent attorney-at-law from San Fernando, whose son got the university boots.

Imagine the youth applied to the Law faculty with three A-Level subjects with good grades but was refused admission and what about my niece who also applied with As and Bs was also rejected.

Furthermore, what about my nephew who was awarded with two national merits in A’Level and was refused admission to the course of his choice.

I have witnessed the agony of defeat in the faces of my younger generation as their parents wrestle with the task of having to explain the reality of the society that we have condoned without doing a dam thing.

I thank Allah everyday that my children have not been subjected to this unjust treatment as they all attended top foreign universities like Harvard and Yale and they have never complained about any form of discrimination.

Without a doubt, Bhoe and his Principles of Fairness document has no significance in the eyes of the youths, as the attitude of some of his subordinates nullified his theoretical garbage?

If Tewarie has doubts about racism then he can investigate one of his senior members of staff who condone the beating of his sister-in-law Indra for marrying an African in Canada.

When the Equal Opportunity Bill was introduced by the UNC, I verily believe that as a plural society we must have some sort of checks and balances and it was on these grounds that I relentlessly campaign in support of the effort.

Maybe if Bhoe is not persuaded by my arguments then I would give him another example of nepotism in UWI and this time by a monster that was created by his own hands.

A few weeks ago I had an interview with IOB as I had applied to do the International MBA, I don’t know what are the procedures used in selecting the panel to conduct these interviews.

However, when I entered the room I met three East Indian women they were the panel selected to do the honours.

Obviously, the first thought that came to my mind is maybe this is a cabal and they thought that my name represented a member of a specific ethnic group.

The reality is that I felt uncomfortable with the panel and I thought that it should be comprised or reflected a better racial composition.

Since this was my experience I now understand why the voices of the masses are crying discrimination on the campus.

In my case it was double jeopardy as I am referred to as a non-conformist for my radical positions in this newspaper column and as a member of an alienated Islamic organisation.

Therefore I don’t expect Tewarie’s representatives to select me because I fall short of the mark and cannot represent their ideals of an executive.

However, this time around I am not “kicksing” or playing games like the other jokers in this town if I am not selected on meritocracy then so be it.

On the other hand, if I sense any form of discrimination, what Bhoe is afraid to tell the nation he would have to tell a judge.

By the hook and the crook the citizens would know if the voice of the masses, statement about discrimination on the campus is real or imaginary as I would be soliciting the services of attorney Anand Ramlogan to champion my cause.
