IX, scheduled to kick off in five weeks time in TnT, is being dubbed
as just another “10 days” in light of recent developments
to the long awaited cultural festival.
A group of disenchanted dancers now going through rehearsals at
Jean Pierre Complex in various disciplines of dance spoke to TnT
Mirror following what they say was another frustrating day of rehearsals.
“Except for the tutor for East Indian dance, no other tutor
seem to know what they are about in here,” grumbled a seasoned
dancer.
“This whole business here looking like a hustle, like a “10
days” something.
“Imagine tutors cussing out each other, dancers not respecting
tutors,” he added, “the truth is some of the dancers
better than the tutor they hire.
“Is real nonsense, it’s all about the money promised
and not for love of culture.
“People like me who really like dance and want to perform
getting turned off right now.”
He said so far dancers have been promised $300 travelling for two
weeks to attend rehearsals leading up to the festival.
“All artistes are expected to be paid for participating.”
The entire Carifesta in which 22 countries are expected to participate
looks in jeopardy at this stage.
Kenny De Silva, chairman of the festival, handed in his resignation
recently and sources reported both he and Culture Minister Joan
Yuille-Williams were not “seeing eye to eye.”
“It’s just a waste of precious time coming here,”
he said.
Performers from across the Caribbean will soon begin arriving for
the festival scheduled to begin September 22.
