TIWU threatens industrial peace:
Row over PTSC driver/conductors

By OTTO CARRINGTON
NO sick leave, no annual vacation and no shift allowance, PTSC, enough is enough,” shouted Kenny Poliah, a representative of the Transport and Industrial Workers’ Union (TIWU) at the front of City Gate last Thursday.

Poliah told TnT Mirror: “The reason we are protesting is that the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) has not abided with the ILO convention of 1975 implementation act the 81st Section which states that the terms of a part-time driver/conductor should be employed at normal hours of work plus benefits.”

Poliah continued: “PTSC has employed part-time driver/conductors since 1994 and to this date they have not received employment with any terms and conditions of employment,” which he stated, “as very unsatisfactory.”

He added: “All we are asking for, are for some terms and conditions that the maintenance workers of PTSC have in their letter of employment.”

Poliah recalled that “part-time driver/conductors work from Port of Spain to Tobago and all they want is a confirmation letter.”

Poliah noted: “The protest has nothing to do with wages, it’s about the well being of the part-time driver\conductor.

“If this agreement isn’t being met, PTSC will not enjoy industrial peace,” Poliah stated.

“PTSC is too rich to have a failure with their industrial relations,” he added.

Mirror asked Poliah if the public transport would be affected.

He replied: “Transport is not being affected by the protest and it is not any intention of the workers.”

“This is a two-day resistance to see if any of our needs would be met by PTSC,” Poliah added.

Mirror tried to contact PTSC manager Ethelbert “Telly” Paul, but he was not available for comment.
