PNM MPs face fire in Beetham

By OTTO CARRINGTON
TWO PNM MPs came in for heavy blows last Thursday in the Beetham from upset residents.

“Not until we get our community centre ‘fire’ for the People’s National Movement (PNM),” shouted Sherma Wilson, chairman of Beetham Estate Community Secretariat and resident of Beetham, last Thursday.

She pleaded that for over 30 years they begged for a community centre and were only getting promises from the government.

Wilson explained that the only way the government understands the call of poor people in the community is by a fiery protest.

“Eulalie James, our representative for over 10 years, has been promising us and yesterday she met with other residents in private with PNM officials to deal with our problems when she should have spoken to us,” she added.

Wilson continued: “On March 23, 2006, a contract was awarded to LJ Construction Limited and was given an assurance that by our Member of Parliament, MP James, National Insurance Property Development Company Limited (NIPDEC) that the centre would be on schedule.”

“I am thankful for the paved roads, apartments and all the other necessities given to the community,” she explained.

HINDS was booed
and jeered.

“But I want our community centre because it will aide in the development of residents,” she added.

Wilson added: “The police came down here with the intention to beat all of we up and they were very abusive towards residents when we were demonstrating.

“All we want is our community centre,” she stated, “I can’t understand, rapid development is going on in the capital city which is a stone’s throw away from Beetham and we are left here like dogs,” she said.

Member of Parliament Fitzgerald Hinds who was on his way to an engagement stopped to hear the plea of the residents told TnT Mirror that, this was not his constituency but he stopped to try to alleviate the problem in the best way that he could.

Hinds who faced a very hostile and unappreciative mob was not in favour of the residents protesting.

Yesterday Member of Parliament, Eulalie James, was also greeted by “boos” and shouts of incompetence by angry residents.

Mirror tried to contact MP James for a statement on the matter but was unavailable for any comment.
