was high drama on Monday night in Sangre Grande as three off-duty
police officers and two brothers ended up in a brawl at a bar in
the eastern town, as curious onlookers expressed shame as one of
the drunken officers began cussing and using racial slurs when one
of his colleagues came to his assistance.
The drama continued along the Eastern Main Road, while the two brothers
were taken to the station where officers tried to restrain the drunken
officer.
The incident started around 7.45 p.m. at a bar along the Eastern
Main Road, near the police station, when a glass fell from the hand
of one of the patrons.
Three off-duty police officers, two from the Sangre Grande Task
Force and another from the Finance Branch, Port of Spain, were in
the bar when one of the officers got into an altercation with a
man after the glass fell.
The argument led to a fight between one of the officers and the
man.
When the man’s brother tried to intervene he was arrested
by the two other officers.
Another officer who is on sick leave (suffering from a broken hand)
was passing by and one of the officers called him.
Despite limited to use of one hand he came to the assistance of
the officer on the ground and pulled off the man.
The East Indian officer then began cussing, and using racial remarks
to the African descent policeman, who wanted to know what to do
with the man he held.
However, the officers decided to take the two brothers down to the
police, followed by the drunken officer.
While on their way to the station the drunken constable, bleeding
from a wound to the head began cussing “wind,” and verbally
abusing the officer whose hand was injured.
At the station the lawman continued using obscene language and had
to be taken to the back of the station to “cool off.”
When he calmed down, he was advised by his colleagues to go for
treatment at the Sangre Grande Hospital, where police took the two
brothers for treatment.
But instead of going to the hospital, the drunken policeman made
a “detour” and headed home where he took out his rage
on his wife and 15-year-old son.
The officer reportedly began to beat his wife and threw them out
of the house in the rain.
Neighbours summoned the police, who had to rescue the woman and
her son. The drunken cop remained hiding inside and refused to come
out. The police then left with the woman and her son, who were taken
to the home of a relative for the night. Insp. Parmanand Ramsingh
is investigating.
So far no charges have been laid. |
