Another call for coup inquiry

By OTTO CARRINGTON
FORMER Attorney General Anthony Smart has called again for an inquiry into the July 1990 militant Muslim coup attempt.

“I have been saying it over and over again that we need to have a proper investigation into what happened on that day 16 years ago.”

Smart told reporters after the annual wreath laying ceremony at the Eternal Flames, Red House, Port of Spain.

“It is the only event that happened in our country’s history that has not been dealt with accordingly and we are going to get the effects as we go along,” he added.

He called upon the University of the West Indies (UWI) to conduct such an analysis by having all participants relate their stories.

“I agree with United National Congress (UNC) Political Leader Winston Dookeran that an investigation into the coup attempt needs to be done,” he said.

Smart was among those who laid wreaths to commemorate the men and women who were killed during the attempted coup.

House Speaker Barry Sinanan said in his welcome speech “that we must remember the bravery of those who were killed during the coup.

“The memories of July, 1990 are fading away, but it is still vivid in the minds of some as an assault which attacked our democracy and our liberty.”

Sinanan praised the armed forces for their patriotism and valiance in defending the country’s freedom and constitution.

Former Government Minister Gloria Henry from the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) said people involved in the attempted coup still could not forget the event.

“We would be wise to learn the important lessons of the indicators that preceded the behaviour that followed.”
