| THE
Presses barely had time to cool, after last week’s Sunday
Mirror exposé on the Rose Janneire land scam, before the
People’s National Movement (PNM) Assistant General Secretary
rushed to comply with a court order to repay a pensioner the sum
of money she defrauded him.
The real estate rip-off surfaced when 69-year-old Arima resident
Elwin Gay made a deal with Janneire -- who is also the executive
assistant to the chairman of the Airports Authority -- to buy a
parcel of land located at #1 Blanchisseuse Road.
However, when he tried to build on the land, he discovered that
Janneire never owned the property, which still belongs to her blind
mother, Rose Elaria Hillebrand.
Gay then took Janneire to court, where her lawyers chose not to
enter a defence, and where a judgment was handed down on August
30, 2005, that she repay the money, plus costs.
Nearly a year later, Janneire finally went to Gay’s Bertha
Street home to give him a cheque.
However, it seemed as if the top PNMite opted for caution and apparently
took along a witness to the hand-over.
That person has been identified as Arima Deputy Mayor and President
of the Carib community, Ricardo Bharath.
But he says he only went on the trip because he was acquainted with
both parties, personally, and Janneire didn’t know where Gay’s
house was.
But Janneire’s Friday visit was not the last.
Gay says despite his name being on all the legal paperwork, Janneire
still spelt it incorrectly.
He then informed her and she prepared another manager’s check
for $100,000, which she left at Bharath’s home last Wednesday,
for him to deliver.
