Oil company reminded its rigs were once shut down for 21 days
Unemployed group threatens bpTT
… rival body creates conflict in Mayaro

By CECILY ASSON

IN two terse letters to its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Robert Riley, giant oil company bpTT has been reminded by Peter Marine, an executive officer of the Mayaro/Guayaguayare Unemployment Organisation & Concerned Citizens (MGUOCC) group, of “how powerful and effective MGUOCC can be”!

The stern reminder came  as Marine, who is also president of the Mayaro arm of MGUOCC, questioned the role of rival Mayaro-based group, the Fisherman’s Association (FA), which, he claimed, has been getting in the way of his organisation.

He further reminded that MGUOCC has been in existence for the past 34 years.

Marine wants bpTT to state on whose side it stands.

“Please be reminded that approximately two to three years ago, all of bpTT’s drilling rigs/platforms were shutdown for 21 days; this is how powerful and effective MGUOCC can be,” Marine boated to Riley.

MGUOCC is also known for staging fiery protests, blocking roads and preventing persons from attending school and work.

“I will not sit idly by and allow this type of unethical behaviour to continue,” he insisted.

bpTT has reportedly been giving generously to both MGUOCC and FA, a development that has left Marine upset especially since he is convinced that his organisation is being overlooked in certain areas in favour of FA.

“Is FA a recruiting agency now?” Marine asked.

“Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it is my understanding that MGUOCC is solely responsible for training and recruitment in the Mayaro/Guayaguayare area.

“Was this group formed in collaboration with bpTT to oppose MGUOCC?”

He noted that in 2005,
Pre Sea and Basic Safety courses were given to the fishermen in Mayaro and Guayaguayare.

He accused bpTT of sponsoring 300 of the safety courses for FA, but of only offering 60 to MGUOCC.

Marine also said that during the period, several persons went offshore on a survey boat to work.

“Not one of our members (MGUOCC) was able to secure employment with that vessel,” Marine slammed.

“bpTT is contributing to mass self destruction in our community by contradicting policy,” Marine insisted.

“The company is investing big money in FA.

“The Mayaro community is totally fed-up of this situation and this can lead to mass demonstration,” he further warned.

Marine, who was recently suspended from his top posts in MGUOCC by the group’s executive, for penning the two letters to Riley, also complained of allegations made against him.

Rumours said he had received a $50,000 bribe.

“The president will not tolerate this rumour and by all means will like to clear his name,” Marine demanded..

In an acknowledgement letter, bpTT told Marine an internal investigation was being conducted on the issues he raised in the two letters submitted to the company.
