Lawrence calls for truce

ONE goal made Trinidad and Tobago’s national football team internationally popular.

And defender Dennis Lawrence will go down in history as the man who put Trinidad and Tobago on the football map, when he scored that one goal against Bahrain that gave them a place at the World Cup finals in Germany.

His victorious header silenced critics and proved that they lived up to their names Soca Warriors, a new force to reckon with at the World Cup finals come June next year.

The Warriors kicked their way to become football heroes with a 0-1 win in Manama that followed a 1-1 draw in Port of Spain.

Lawrence told the thousands of supporters at Piarco International Airport last Thursday, upon the team’s return he hopes that the team’s victory could slow crime down.

“Although most of us live abroad, we are aware of the crime situation in Trinidad,” said Lawrence.

“We hope that our victory would bring back some peace and stability in our country,” he added.

However, four more murders were reported by then.

Some of the plans for the motorcade on the Eastern Main Road, including steelpan serenading had to be cancelled because of long delays on the way.

Many supporters who were waiting at the Morvant junction since 3 p.m., where they were supposed to be greeted with steelpan music from Solo Harmonites were disappointed that the new football heroes did not stop at the junction as was initially advertised.

All the entertainment action for the Soca Warriors was diverted to Brian Lara Promenade, where the biggest welcome festival after Carnival awaited them.
