KHION DELAS, a 17-year-old youth of Rousillac Road, La Brea, has received top recognition for his outstanding performance during the August holidays workshop held for steel pan arranging and drumming.

Delas was among 61 youths from both north and south Trinidad who participated in the classes.

The youngster said that he has a deep passion for all kinds of music and that was why he had a special interest in the course.

He said he would like to become a composer and arranger when he gets older; he also revealed that he would be pursuing a degree in music.

“Arranging is a different experience for me; it opens you to many different types of music and cultures,” he stated.

Khion said that he loves music so much that he plays quite a number of instruments which include the steel pan, piano, both the bass and normal guitar, the recorder, violin and harmonica.

Despite his overwhelming passion for music, the youngster still found time to attain 10 CXC passes with three distinctions.

His CXC passes include Mathematics, English A, Literature, Spanish, French, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography and History.

Khion also plays pan with Phase Two Pan Groove of Tragarete Road, Port of Spain, although he resides in the deep south of Trinidad. Following in close pursuit of Khion is his six-year-old brother, Khaalis Delas, who also performed extremely well at the drumming workshop.

Khaalis said he loves music, too, and would like to play as much instruments as he can, just like his older brother.

The six-year-old also plays the steel pan extremely well, according to his older brother.

The Pan Co-ordinating Council alongside the Center for Creative and Festival Arts at the University of the West Indies hosted the training camps.

British Petroleum of Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) sponsored the workshops.

Parliamentary representative for Tunapuna Eddie Hart gave the feature address to the graduates during the ceremony held at the Eric Williams Auditorium, La Joya, St. Joseph last Monday.
