Guns galore at school bazaar
... but cops keep a safe distance as vendors make a killing

By Joeline Thomas

BOYS and girls alike of a Port of Spain primary school, took part in a friendly “shoot out” last Sunday, at their annual bazaar.

Some of the caps guns used in the “shoot-out”, many resembling .45 revolvers, were bought at the bazaar, while other children brought theirs from home.

Two boys, each no older than 10 years old, told TnT Mirror that they bought theirs outside the school for a mere $4, $6 less than the offered price at the bazaar.

Although the guns were being purchased on the school’s compound, neither teachers nor parents sold them; it was an “outside” vendor who made the massive profits at the bazaar.

Apart from all the other fun activities at the venture, children found extreme pleasure in “shooting-up” one another while the music blasted.

After being “shot” by four boys at one time, a young boy complained of an earache from the loud blast of the caps in his ear.

The youngster then purchased a toy gun of his own and went in search of the boys who “shot” him earlier.

One angry parent told Mirror that she was outraged at the entire situation, but she did not complain to the school authorities.

The mother said: “The bazaar was madness; if you see how the children were putting their faces while they were ‘shooting-up’ each other.

“The ironic thing was that there were police present watching the entire fiasco unfold before their very eyes.

“Instead of ordering the salesman to stop selling the guns to the children, the officers laughed at the children running around ‘shooting’ each other with their fake guns.

“These little things make me wonder what kind of society we now live in.”

Some parents were even seen giving their children money to buy the guns.

The guns looked like real .45 revolvers and children also complained that the sulfur from the shots stung them.
