SURGE: We’re no one hit wonder

By TRESS HILAIRE
Their distinctive dance moves and exhilarating performances to the song, In Your Timing Girl, won them the award for Best Duo Soca Group at the recently held International Soca Awards.

An experience the group Surge say they’d always cherish.

Surge (comprising of Kwesai Austin, Nicholas Walker, Tigana Duncan, Brandon Lewis and David Walker) took T&T by storm in late 2005 when they released In Your Timing Girl, a collaborative tune by all members, which was labelled a hit by music producer $hel $hock, even before it was made public.

Though the song is a blend of R&B and Soca, these guys initially sang what they term “bacchanal music” that is, jump and wine kind of tunes, but later they switched to a softer beat.

Subsequent to the release of In Your Timing Girl, Surge has become a household name, as they are considered to be one of the best acts for Carnival 2006.

Considered to be one of the best acts for Carnival 2006,
Surge has easily become a household name.

With their ages ranging from 20 to 23 years, this group of talented young men will not be seen as one hit wonders.

Adopting entertaining as their careers, Surge has already begun work on future projects.

Following a recent visit to the recording studio, Surge sat down to an interview with Sunday PUNCH, where they shared info on what fans can expect soon.

“We were just experimenting and working on a track titled Deception. It’s actually the opposite of In Your Timing Girl, where after spending time with the girl, she betrays you. Many guys can relate to that story and all our songs tells a story,” they explained.

“With the song, comes signature dance moves. With our choreographer tapping into our individual and natural talent, we’re sure it’s one most people will enjoy so they can look out for that,” they added.

Surge is currently enjoying their newfound success, appreciating their fans and the fact that youths are looking up to them as an inspiration.

“It’s a great feeling, we do enjoy the popularity and the girls, we mean fans,” they said with a few laughs.

“We’re also thankful that our music is pleasing to all age groups. The adoration by every one is a really good feeling.”

Surge also released another track earlier this year called Why, which they would like radio stations to focus on.

“Why speaks of all the criminal aspects in our society, it’s really a song about reality. The positive message the song brings forth is important to us.”

Though it may seem that Surge suddenly surfaced and gained popularity quickly, the group expressed that they’ve worked extremely hard to be where they are today.

“We used to practice on the pavement on Dundonald Street in Port of Spain, especially since the backyard thing didn’t work out, as breadfruit used to fall from my tree and onto our heads,” said Tigana jokingly.

“We used straws, forks and bottles as microphones and it was also tough getting finance to cover recording fees,” he added.

“Our music video helped out in that department though, and we’re extremely thankful for all those who were responsible in every single way, for getting us on the right track, we’ll also take pleasure in working with them again.”

“Special thanks to our sponsors like Radical Designs, they’re responsible for our suave look, as well as our newest sponsor out of New York, Bape Clothing Line.”

In Your Timing Girl was just the beginning for us. It’s like baking a cake, everything takes time, you can’t just put the batter in and expect it to be ready after two minutes,” said David. “For all those who thought we were going to be a one hit wonder, think again, because people can say whatever they want. We intend to continue working hard and prove the critics who inspire us wrong,” they said.
