‘True Warriors’ save the day in Canada

By TONY ENO
BIG 10 Movement created history in Toronto, Canada on August 27, 2007.

Since February this year, promoter Mr. Narchriste, along with other friends and associates, thought of the idea of bringing the Soca Warriors to Toronto.

With a limited budget and big ideas, they put a team of enthusiastic friends and relatives to make it happen … and it did, after a huge disappointment by two investors pulling out, and being told it could not happen, Narchriste and his team set out to prove Canada wrong.

One disappointment after another cropped up, but the group continued pushing forward.

The T&T PR Manager Gail Brereton came on board two week prior to the event to assist, then the sad news came the famous Soca Warriors were unable to attend.

Plan “B” was put in effect with the help of Ancil Elcock, Soca Warriors who was unable to leave Trinidad helped put an A1 team together of “True Warriors” in the space of 20 minutes.

It was one of the greatest events of the summer and plans are already in effect for 2007. The players had very little time to prepare themselves for the field which became slippery due to a downpour of rain, but was able to put on a good show, in the background the Soca Warriors fans in Toronto continued singing the theme song to boost the morale of the team.

WARRIOR SUPPORTERS IN CANADA

The Warriors in Canada drew a
packed audience.

Trinidad & Tobago defeated Jamaica by 1-0 as everyone held their breath for their team to win. The audience jumped for joy singing the Soca Warriors theme in delight, it worked as our Trinidadian brothers made us proud.

The Consul General of Trinidad and Tobago Mr. Michael Lashley and the Consul General of Jamaica Mrs. Anne-Marie Bonner, greeted the teams and later handed out trophies and medals.

Big 10 Movement want to congratulate the Consulate and his staff for the support given; Ms. Ianthe Gould-Best for performing a miracle with the travel arrangements, Diane Woods-Garcia for all the assistance promoting the Scarborough East Youth Soccer group who also won the trophy and all other supporters.
