Soca confrontation with Trini promoters
BAJANS BARKING!

By CECILY ASSON
UNGRATEFUL!

That’s how local entertainment industry insiders described their Bajan colleagues who have gone at the throat of Frank Martineau of Spektakula Promotions, the well-known Trinidadian promoter, who, within recent times, has been successfully staging a series of concerts in the Land of Flying Fish.

The overwhelming response to exclusively Trini shows put on by a Trini promoter in neighbouring Barbados has raised the ire of the Bajans.

They want Martineau out of Barbados as he’s now being seen as “the real enemy in the music industry”, all because of his “almost every fortnight” promotions on the island and particularly because it’s “dominated by Trinidadian artistes”.

“Why are they barking so?” asked one promoter, who requested anonymity.

“It’s pure jealousy.”

He noted that Trinis have always been generous to Bajan artistes, citing the just-concluded World Cup Finals in Germany where their artistes went as part of the Trini cultural contingent, and got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their talents to millions.

“Barbados was not in the World Cup Finals,” he said.

“Yet they had a presence in Germany (thanks to Trinidad and Tobago) and were well-represented by their top performers Alison Hinds and Rupee.

“Those two were the toast in the Trini camp.

“If Trinis were selfish would the promoter have invited the Bajans along with them to Germany?”

“We have enough artistes here who could have caught the eyes of the promoter, but Rupee and Alison Hinds were taken.”

Ricky Jordan’s editorial, which appeared last Friday 23 in the Barbados Nation, slammed Martineau.

One of Martineau’s top local shows, Soca Gold, which was hailed by Jordan, as a “master show” will be in Barbados as part of Crop Over celebrations.

“We are in the heart of Crop Over and we are having Soca Gold,” lamented Jordan, “a Trini show which was not even held in the heart of TnT Carnival this year.

“I know because I attended it.”

He said Soca Gold was staged on Carnival Monday night at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port of Spain.

He went on: “Some 4,000 people attended the event, so I know it’s a master show.

“But on a tent night as soon as Crop Over starts to heat up?

“Who is the real enemy in our music industry”?

Jordan stated that despite Martineau’s “admirable entrepreneurial spirit”, he must be reminded that respect is due.

He said Bajan artistes struggle to make a full occupation out of their art.

Sorry Jordan.

Remember the Bajan invasion in TnT a few years ago.

What about top R&B singer Rihanna who’s now on top of the international charts?
