Calypso Monarch 2006 Luta:
No more tent for me!
‘We’ll be taking kaiso to the people’

By CECILY ASSON, Senior Reporter

DON’T expect to ever see 2006 Calypso Monarch Luta (Morel Peters) working fulltime in a calypso tent during the carnival season again!

The champ is now his own man, singing as many songs as he like in any one show and keeping his die-hard fans eternally happy.

His two good friends, fellow calypsonians Funny and Rio are also part of this new move which takes the art form to the people wherever they are, giving them what they ask for without anything getting in the way.

The three veterans have named their road show “Funluri”.

“That’s Funny, Luta and Rio,” laughed Luta, during an interview with Sunday PUNCH.

“And believe me we are having more fun now than we ever had while working in the tents over the years.”

For C2K6, “Funluri” performed to large appreciative audiences at various venues in the East, the Mas Camp Pub, and deep South Santa Flora.

Luta said it was unfortunate that they were unable to take the show cross-country.

“It’s just that it was our first time …”

He has promised for 2007 and beyond, TnT will hear and see much more of them.

The monarch who is still basking in his victory went on to explain that calypso tents no longer offered much to artistes of their calibre.

“The three of us along with Cardinal, MBA and Gypsy walked away from Spektakula Tent because we found we weren’t allowed to do enough,” Luta explained.

“We’ve got so much music and could only sing one song in the tent.”

“Funluri” gives them the opportunity to perform a much wider variety from their repertoire.

He said the decision to go outside the tents has proved more than successful for the trio.

“Tents?” the 2006 unattached Calypso Monarch shot back when asked if he will be back in one next year.

“We enjoyed what we did so much that we think this is the way to go.”

“Take the kaiso to the people,” ended the former teacher who this year had the crowd eating out of his hands with his winning number, Kaiso Kaiso.

Kaiso Kaiso longed for the rhymes and melody of yesteryear.
