Jacqui Koon How enjoys
Best of both worlds
- beauty pageants and Carnival mas designs

By Bibi Khan

THE woman who has advised top fashion models and queens for the last 40 years is about to make sure traditional mas has a place in Carnival 2K6 especially in South Trinidad.

Jacqueline Koon How originally from San Fernando told the Sunday PUNCH that she was anxious to bring back ole time mas to the forefront because she believes that Carnival should not just be about the “bikini and beads”.

Koon How now designs costumes for a South band with two sections. One of which will be sailor wear called S.S. Trinbago 3000 for adults and sea creatures “I See the Sea” for children.

The St. Benedict’s College graduate explained: “The tiny tots will be wearing everything from sea turtles to shipwreck costumes, while the adults will wear sailor costumes depicting a voyage up to when they land.

“We decided to go the traditional way with a modern twist.

“In Port of Spain a lot of people would rather enjoy themselves than portray a mas but up this side we are doing things a little different.”

She revealed that many people welcomed the idea and said she have found a way to satisfy those people who want to go traditional and the “bikini and beads” type.

“We also try to include an aspect of traditional mas in the children’s costumes.”

The famous designer who was once a top model said that she now designs only costumes because she felt that “fashion is no longer a challenge”.

Now a fashion consultant with her modelling agency, House of Jacqui and a director in the company Heather Jones Limited, Koon How disclosed that she has also launched a Carnival section, Burrokeets UK in Nottinghill’s celebrations and designed costumes for another band called Xplosions in Antigua.

And at an age 60, where most people would be enjoying the peaceful life, she is only happy to immerse herself in real life action.

She also does not miss playing mas herself.

“My whole family is involved in Carnival.

“My son Rolan St. George is bringing out a section for Trini Revellers, my son-in-law Junior Regalo is launching a J’Ouvert band for City Week on November 12.”

The agency has over 100 models and numerous beauty queens have passed through its doors, one of which is Faye Alibocas.

While employed at the agency a potential model is trained on personal etiquette ranging from hair care, skin care and make up, modelling, nails and dining techniques.

There is also a class for youngsters from age six to 16.

But she is now presently concentrating on Carnival and beauty pageants.

She said jokingly of the pageants: “I intend to take the Caribbean by storm.”

As the beauty pageant time of year approaches she said that there are 15 competitions over a three-week span and she enjoys being in the thick of things.
