Slaying of the innocent
... ‘they never looked at the man, just his possessions’

By ANNA POLIAH
RELATIVES of murdered Caroni engineer Mohanlal are pleading for answers.

Mohanlal’s daughter-in-law, Lisa Mohanlal told TnT Mirror the family does not know what really happened.

Lisa said: “It is only speculations we are going on.

“We would like to see speedy action in investigating the murder.”

Mohanlal, a.k.a. “Chile”, 65, a former Caroni (1975) Limited worker, left his Abass Avenue, Orange Field, Carapichaima home last May 30 to attend the funeral of a villager.

He left in his Almera PBS 541 motorcar wearing gold jewelry. He did not return home.

Mohanlal’s common-law wife, Angela Seecharan, also of Orange Field, alerted his family when he did not show up at her place.

Lisa told Mirror three of Mohanlal’s sons immediately started a search in the district.

She said the search was futile.

The grieving daughter-in-law said reports about Mohanlal’s disappearance were made at both the Freeport and Chaguanas Police Stations.

She said the family also called all hospitals to inquire if there were any unidentified bodies but got negative answers.

The following day at 8 a.m., Lisa told Mirror: “Through news on the radio, we learnt that an unidentified body was discovered at the foot of the Fort George Hill.”

Mohanlal’s sons went to view the body and positively identified it as his.

The body was found lying on the ground with the face up, bearing a gunshot wound to the left side of the head.

Mohanlal’s Almera was not found.

“We were at home and by 11 am we knew that it was Nana’s corpse,” Lisa related.

Nana is the Hindi word for grandfather and the name by which Lisa referred to him.

She said he never treated her like a daughter-in-law but as a daughter.

Lisa told Mirror Mohanlal was a loving, understanding and supportive father-in-law.

She said he spent a lot of time with his six grandchildren.

“He also tended to the animals and the garden around the house.

“When he finished his work, he used to lie in the hammock and sing Indian classical songs,” Lisa said.

Relatives said the persons responsible for Mohanlal’s murder looked at his possession.

“They did not take time to look at the man, Mohanlal.

“The person/persons responsible could have taken all Mohanlal’s material possessions and spared his life,” a relative told Mirror.

Relatives said they are hoping for the perpetrators of the murder to be caught.

Relatives further dismissed reports on an Internet website that Mohanlal was executed because he was involved in illegal drugs.

“That is so far from the truth,” another distressed relative said.

“The writer simply does not want to accept the fact that an innocent man lost his life because of a robbery.

“Mohanlal worked at Caroni Limited for 45 years and never took one day sick leave.

“And that was how he taught us. He taught us good values,” the relatives added.
