EVEN though Trinidad and Tobago only had an outside chance of
making it through to the Round of 16, the beauty from Bermuda
was determined to enjoy every last minute of calypso atmosphere
at the FIFA World Cup.
“This World Cup is just amazing!
“This will be the third of my team’s games that I’ll
have seen, and I was crossing my fingers that we got through to
the next round!”
According to the 41-year-old, the very fact that this tiny nation
from the Caribbean qualified for the tournament is a success in
itself.
“We’re such a small country that simply taking part
is a real honour and a great success for us.”
The bank clerk has been staying with friends in Germany since
June 9 and has been travelling all around the country.
“Germany is such a great place. I’ve been to Bochum,
Berlin, Nuremberg and Munich.
“All the people I’ve met have been so friendly and
welcoming and the beer here is the best in the world.”
She had booked her flight home for June 27, so convinced was she
that Trinidad and Tobago would get through to the last 16.
“I believe in our team and even though we didn’t get
through, I’m not sad. “They have played so well and
we’re all happy.
“Whatever the result we are celebrating, with all our new-found
German friends!”

Trinidad and Tobago’s first appearance at a FIFA World Cup
has caused quite a stir.

On the pitch, they managed to hold Sweden to a 0-0 draw in their
opening Group B match, while off the pitch, their friendly, outgoing
fans have made an excellent impression.
One such supporter is Joey ‘Posh’ Richardson, who was
chosen as Hyundai Fan of the Match for their game against England
at the FIFA World Cup Stadium in Nuremberg.
Along with the rest of the 6,000 Soca Warriors fans, Joey was spicing
up the atmosphere in the ground before the kick-off.
Dressed in red from head to foot and decked out with countless fan
accessories, the 50-year-old policeman from San Juan was very much
the pre-match entertainment in himself.
“We’re a small country, but we’re big on passion,”
said Posh, who was busy handing out business cards to fans before
the match, on which he introduces himself as “representative
and fun co-ordinator for Trinidad and Tobago”. “This
is such a great experience,” he said proudly when asked about
his first ever visit to Germany.
“Since we arrived, everyone has been really friendly and nice.
Germany is a wonderful place.”
Joey also described his team’s performances thus far as “wonderful”.
“Sweden should have won 5-0 against us,” he said, “but
the 0-0 result was like a victory.”
He was also hoping for a win against his country’s former
colonial masters. “We’ll win 2-1 today and continue
our relentless march to the final,” maintained ‘Poshman’
in all seriousness.
Joey had already arranged his post-match entertainment in advance.
“Afterwards, we’re going into the city and gonna party
non-stop!”
