Warriors open eyes of the world

By ALAN CORNEAL, in Germany
THE performance on Saturday of the Soca Warriors, opened the eyes of the football world.

A 0-0 draw would be scorned at by most of the world’s football super powers but, for the country with the smallest population ever to qualify for the finals, that was a great start.

The fans here in Germany were impressed with the effort put in by the boys from the twin-island republic, so much so that England had to take them very serious in calling on Wayne Rooney for a possible start.

The standouts for TnT were Dwight Yorke and of cause Shaka Hislop, but the total effort was nothing short of unbelievable.

The crowd of Trinis who came from all corners of the globe got their money’s worth and were proud to be a Trini on that day. The football itself was not the highest standard, as Sweden never was able to take advantage of the ball possesion.

The Warriors looked dangerous only a few times, Cornel Glen’s right-foot shot almost stopping the hearts of the army of yellow though they were sure that it would be only a matter of time before they would find the goal. It never came.

The flying Rasta in defence cleared every attempt to find Larsson, while Yorke marshalled his troops from in front and never played like one who was “washed up” according to the English Press.

This effort could be just what our boys needed to make them believe that they belong here.

I’m sure it helped to look up into the stands and see their countrymen in full support.

After the game, Trinis danced around the stadium singing “with 10 men” as this made the effort more significant.

The next step was to show England that we are no walkovers -- the English who believed that the team who beats TnT by the most goals would win the group.

The result meant England had to go out there and do the business knowing that TnT had won the hearts of the local German people.

It was never going to be an easy task for the Calypso kids but now they can really believe that all things are possible.

The loss of Avery John in defence will make the coach shift around players but I’m sure he, too, did not expect to see the team fight and scrap for every ball in the manner they did.

I have to give the coach credit for changing the team into a useful World Cup unit, capable on upsetting the casual plans of the football superpowers.

We all know that England, on paper, has a team that might be able to win the Cup, but first they have to pass through Trinidad.

As for the rest of playing action, the Germans started off as expected with a win, while Japan lost a game it was expected to win.

The USA was put in its place by the Czech Republic, while Mexico showed that it is ready for these finals.

Argentina rolled off the winners but must build on that performance if it wants a chance to take the Cup home.

All in all, the 2006 World Cup Finals have started out just as good as could be expected and I’m sure the world is sitting on the edge of their seats ready for whatever there is to come.
