Child falls through HDC’s Maloney trap

By SUZETTE EDWARDS-LEWIS

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD Maloney infant almost lost his life when he fell through a rusty defective railing on the staircase at Building Three, Maloney Gardens.

Little Jervon Julien was on his way down the stairs to visit his cousin on the ground floor, when his foot slipped on the second floor through a rusty railing that had a few missing bars.

“As if God was with him, he stuck and a young boy came and pulled him back through,” said Jervon’s mother, Pinky.

However, because the railing was rusty and old, Jervon suffered several deep cuts to his leg. He was bleeding profusely and had to be rushed to the Arima Health Facility.

“I am asking Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to do something about the dilapidated staircases,” the mother said.

“There are two many rail bars missing, causing danger to our children,” she added.

“My son could have lost his leg, died or seriously hurt himself if he had fallen right through.

Residents said that Jervon is not the first child to have fallen from one floor through a missing bar.

“Is a few children fall already. We’re just lucky.

“But like HDC waiting for us to lose one of our children before they do something about the dilapidated railings.

“I went to complain to HDC at Maloney and was told that the person I had to see was on lunch,” said Pinky.

TnT Mirror was also told that the buildings are falling apart, with altogether missing railings and broken steps, among other problems that residents face on a daily basis.

“We want HDC to concentrate on the people’s safety in the buildings instead of looking to throw people out of their homes,” ended Pinky.
