THERE will be drastic improvement with traffic congestion in Chaguanas shortly.

Chairman of Infrastructure and Planning of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation (CBC), Councillor Gopaul Boodhan, said that the beginning of the Ring Road around Chaguanas would greatly address the traffic woes in the borough.

Chaguanas Mayor Dr Surujrattan Rambachan also told TnT Mirror that he took the concept of the ring road around Chaguanas from a 2001 report by UDECOTT.

He said a request for upgrading of the roads was submitted to the Minister of Works Colm Imbert in 2005, and the projects have been approved.

Upgrade works of the roads are to be undertaken in the first quarter of 2006.

Boodhan, Councillor of Montrose, explained that a lay-by (deceleration lane) along the Solomon Hochoy Highway, through the Southern Main Road in the vicinity of Factory Road will provide easier traffic access through Factory Road to Tasker Road to Pierre Road.

He said motorists heading to that direction would benefit greatly from this move.

“Instead of getting into the town area, a driver will be able to access lower Chaguanas via the exit ramp.

“The driver could then proceed easily to areas like Felicity, Perseverance Road and up to Pierre Road via the Tasker Road where they can again get onto Caroni Savannah Road and to the Uriah Butler Highway, through Munroe Road,” Boodhan explained.

An entrance to ASJA Educational Complex (ASJA Boys, Girls and Primary School) in Charlieville will also be constructed from the Tasker Road to reduce traffic caused by the three schools.

The Edinburgh 500 Boulevard off the Solomon Hochoy Highway, that has already been constructed, will be upgraded with a bridge to give access to Montrose, Londenville, Todd’s Road and Caparo.

Boodhan said Rodney Road, Endeavour, that has become heavily commercialised, will also be widened, starting from the bridge on Eastern Avenue to the Highway.

A lay-by in the vicinity of the Divali Nagar Site on Nasarool Ramaya Road will also be upgraded and will take traffic to the back of Pricesmart to Rodney Road, Lange Park and Londenville and environs.

Tasker Road to be upgraded.

Biljah Road West will be widened and construction of box drains and rehabilitation of roadway to reduce traffic proceeding to Munroe Road Overpass, Caroni Savannah Road and the Chaguanas Overpass are also part of the plan to ease congestion.

Boodhan said Biljah Road East (next to Divali Nagar Site) will be fixed and paved and opened straight to the Southern Main Road.

A lay-by will be constructed at Chenelle Drive, Savannah Heights to improve the road network for the area.

A lay-by will be constructed at Jerningham Junction to take traffic off the South Bound Lane of the Uriah Butler Highway, Boodhan explained.

He said there will be improvement to the Chaguanas Main Road footpath.

The CBC intends to approach businessmen for placements of cylinder to plant trees and flowers to enhance the Borough.
