JP hangs himself

By AZAD ALI

A FORMER Justice of the Peace who was angry because his tenant transformed his house in South Trinidad into a brothel, was found hanging at his Trincity home on Monday evening.

Mustapha Khan, 58, of Flamingo Street, Trincity, was found with a piece of rope around his neck hanging from a doorway by his landlady around 4.15 p.m.

Khan, a staunch Muslim, who spent 17 years working at the magistrate court left a suicide note apologising for taking his own life.

In the short note, Khan also blamed financial problems for his death and was not happy that a house he rented out in La Romaine was allegedly used as a brothel.

Khan, who formerly lived at Sangre Grande, sold a piece of land he inherited from his parents some years ago and invested the money in a million dollar house in South.

But he chose to rent out the South house and rent for himself an apartment since he lived alone.

His relatives expressed shock over his death saying that they were unaware he was experiencing any kind of problems.

“He was such a quiet person, we would never believe that he would take his own life,” his sister, Jesse, said.

His landlady, State Attorney Joy Balkaran, who broke down in tears while reading the suicide note, said Khan was renting an apartment at her home for the past eight years and showed no signs of being depressed.

When she did not see him on Sunday she made a check when she returned home on Monday evening and found him hanging in a doorway to the kitchen.

Dr. Vinod Mahabir, DMO of St. George, who visited the scene said Khan might have hanged himself sometime on Sunday.

After viewing the body he ordered its removal to the hospital for a post-mortem.
