People’s Choice Rasika ‘spits’ on Chutney Soca Monarch

By CECILY ASSON

RASIKA DINDIAL who copped the “People’s Choice” but who could only manage an eighth place in last Saturday’s Chutney Soca Monarch Competition has slammed organisers and judges of the event!

The show that went into wee hours of the morning was held at Skinner Park San Fernando before a massive audience.

And so annoyed is the popular chutney artiste who right now has the hottest Chutney, Maticoor Night for 2006 has also said goodbye to the annual competition for good.

“Not me and them again,” she groaned, “they killing the Chutney tradition.

“I going back to sing in cooking, weddings and other functions and leave competition alone.

“I never like it in the first place and is really fans and close friends who kept nagging me to take part.”

Dindial, who told TnT Mirror she could read Hindi has become disenchanted with the standard of the competition.

“… Not after what George Singh (promoter) told us,” she said in bitter tones.

“They say they judging strong lyrics and want a message in the song.

“I relate a true story about what goes on the night before the wedding, sing proper Hindi, and that is what they do to me. All who they put in front of me, what they singing make no sense, some of them don’t even know what they singing and pronouncing the Hindi words wrong.

“When it comes to Hindi nobody could tie me up.”

Dindial of Kelly Village, Caroni, said she has been singing professionally for the past 10 years and continues to live a humble life in her hometown.

“I not looking for fame that is why I don’t really like competitions, I like doing my thing in private functions,” the mother of one went on.

“It worries me that everybody want to be singer when they really can’t sing a thing.

“They kamsoor with the music.”

She was also hard on judges for the night saying that singers had to give their lyrics and translation to them.

“If they is real judges,” Dinidal argued, “how come we have to translate the Hindi for them.

“They should know Hindi, they should be able to recognise proper pronunciation.

“What kind of judges are they?”

Dinidal’s other selection was Na Jaide, a book song that tells a story of not returning to a cave.

Dindial’s low placing brought jeers from the crowd when the results were finally announced.

Gracing the Chutney Soca Monarch stage that evening was soca superstar Machel Montano who had Andy Singh, Melobugz lead vocalist alongside.

Eventual winner was policeman Rooplal Gidharrie who dethroned 2005 Monarch Heeralal Rampartap into second place.

Carlene Wells was the third place winner.
