‘Mas in Yuh Ras’

By AZAD ALI
OPPOSITION Leader Basdeo Panday appears to revel playing “Mas in Yuh Ras” for this Carnival.

The old Silver Fox last week boldly launched his United National Congress (UNC) ole mas band, “Sleeping With The Devil”.

Among the sections he is presenting are: “Fire”, “Resurrection”, “Mash It Up” and “Devil”.

A number of UNC politicians have already began to line up to head the various sections.

Former Senator Robin Monntano, who got his first costume, “Fire”, last week, is already gyrating up to the Bas’ tune.

Montano’s portrayal is “Suck My Socks.”

Among the others jumping up in the “Fire” section are UNC Chief Whip, Ganga Singh and Senator Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan.

Whip-cracking Jab Jab Singh, is tipped to portray “The Devil Is Evil”, while Seepersad-Bachan’s costume will be named “Betrayal”.

Masqueraders, like former Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, Trevor Sudama, Nizam Mohammed and Carlos John have already signed up to play in the “Resurrection” section.

Maharaj, Mohammed and John’s portrayals are likely to be “Ah Making a Comeback”, “Devil Speaks” and “Cheque Dis Out”.

The portrayal of Jack Warner, who will play “Two-Face”, is entitled “Yesterday was Yesterday, Today is Today”.

King of the Band, Panday, has a costume “All Hell Broke Loose”.

He will be leading the section “Mash It Up Before Ah Leave.”

Political Leader Winston Dookeran has been dropped from the band and is now dropping rubber talk about “a new Progressive mas band”.

He won’t “Sleep With The Devil”, his colleagues say.

The “Progressives” are likely to outfit opposing characters, with players like Manohar Ramsaran, Roodal Moonilal and Sadiq Baksh checking out the feathered costumes.

Some of the sections in the Progressives camp are “Birds of a Feather”, “Ready to Take Flight” and “Flock Off Like The Birds in Winter”.

Then there, like “Bah Bah Black Sheep”, Chandresh Sharma is playing doti mas.

Dr. Hamza Rafeeq, Adesh Nanan, Harry Partap, Subash Panday and Kamla Persad-Bissessar are all playing “Wait and See”.

Meanwhile, Queen of her husband’s band, Oma, seems to have taken Destra’s advice to “Max It Up”.

There are also efforts to lure PNM backencher, Larry Achong to jump up with Ramsaran in the section, “Cussbud”.

Achong’s rumpled costume is named “Drunk and Disorderly”.
