WHEN everything else fails, try prayers.
And the people of Chatham, Cedros and environs did just that on
Friday, when they began with an interfaith service in front of the
Marli Street, Port of Spain entrance to the US Embassy, before continuing
on a candlelight march to end in front of the White Hall offices
of Prime Minister Patrick Manning.

The South-Western
Peninsula residents have been protesting against the building of
a smelter plant in their community and have gone one step further
in their attack.
Their greatest fears are the pollutant emissions that will harm
the body, and trace pollutants and toxins that are going to end
up in our food, water, and oxygen supplies.
Besides those directly affected, other interests groups were there
to lend support.
Clergy members from different faiths asked God to help make a decision
that is right for the people and for the Earth.
And environmentalists, on the other hand, encouraged the people
to not give up their struggle.
But some observers felt that, like the candles in the procession,
their efforts will be blown out in the wind. |

The candlelight procession included young
and old. |

The
parade ended in front of White Hall.
