Tewarie leads the bacchanal

By AZAD ALI and ANNA POLIAH

BACCHANAL was high on the front burner at Rienzi Complex, Couva hours after Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday was jailed last Monday.

Panday, 73, the Chairman of the United National Congress (UNC) was found guilty of failing to declare his London Bank account to the Integrity Commission for the years 1997,1998 and 1999.

He was jailed on each charge for two years.

The jail sentence would run concurrently.

The first sign of bacchanal at Rienzi Complex was shown by several party supporters, who made remarks that certain people in the party wanted Panday in jail.

One woman loudly proclaimed that she was very hurt about the outcome of Panday’s matter and that she would deal with “them” when they come in Laventille.

Then, when the party’s executive meeting ended, Winston Dookeran, political leader of the appeared to be troubled.

He remained in a meeting with a small group of supporters instead of heading to the upstairs of the complex where a meeting with the public was carded to begin.

Dookeran was heard telling his press officer, Nirad Tewarie that Vice Chairman, Vasant Bharat told him not to speak at the meeting.

All hell broke loose when Dookeran and his group eventually went upstairs of the complex.

Dookeran remained in the crowd talking to reporters and did not go to the podium where a seat for him remained empty.

As Bharat began to speak, Tewarie, who was obviously angry, questioned loudly why Dookeran was prevented from speaking.

Other members of Dookeran’s group made remarks about people wanting Panday in jail.

Some UNC members actually had to ask others why they were behaving in such a manner.

Dookeran then proceeded out of the rowdy proceedings with his small group of about 20 persons.

He left shortly after.
