WHILE lesser acts continue to moan and groan about Trinis not appreciating their own, Shurwayne Winchester, Bunji Garlin and Machel Montano proved them wrong.

Soca held its own alongside Grammy award winner Kanye West at the first of TSTT’s “bmobile” promotional concerts held last week Thursday at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port of Spain.

Unlike other local concerts featuring international acts, this one seemed to be well-organised, with adequate restroom facilities, food and drinks.

The various sections were properly demarcated with no obvious breaches of security, and TnT Mirror is yet to hear any complaints concerning the comfort and security of patrons.

The concert was also an opportunity for TSTT to get a head start in promoting its new products and services in the now almost de-monopolised local telecommunications market.

The company is reported to have given away hundreds of mobile telephones and thousands of hours of free air-time.

Not even the persistent drizzle could have dampened the enthusiasm of the large, mostly young crowd as they revelled in the local fare dished out by Winchester, who was backed by his band Traffik, Garlin and his band Asylum, and Montano accompanied by Xtatik. But the audience saved the thundering applause and deafening screams of appreciation for West, as he made his way on stage delivering his 2005 hit, Diamonds.

Accompanied by a live string orchestra, West delivered some of his less well-known numbers, including Heard ’Em Say, Roses and Touch The Sky from his latest album, Late Registration.

He introduced his newer fans to songs from his debut album College Drop Out, including Spaceship and I’ll Fly Away.

The internationally acclaimed rapper/Hip-Hop star also included some yet to be released material before sending the crowd wild again with his other 2005 hit, Gold Digger.

Very much present, but avoiding the cameras was world batting star, Brian Lara.
