THE Appeals Committee has
halved the penalties on the main culprits in the ugly brawl that
marred the November 4 Toyota Cup Pro-League Football final.
San Juan Jabloteh’s coach Terry Fenwick must now pay a $12,000
fine instead of $24,000; while his 10-match ban has been reduced
to four matches.
Jabloteh defender Ian Gray’s six-match ban has also been sliced
down to three.
In the case of Englishman Fenwick, the Appeals Committee of the
Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) deemed the original
punishment to be cruel and harsh.
Fenwick was shown on camera clearly elbowing the face of W Connection
player Gefferson da Silva Goulart who had been sprinting to the
sideline to celebrate a goal against Jabloteh.
This triggered a brawl as players of both sides reacted.
Fenwick was fined and banned by the Disciplinary Committee of the
TnT Professional Football League (PFL).
Both men filed an appeal, which came up last Saturday before a two-man
TTFF Appeals Committee comprising, special advisor Jack Warner (the
chairman) and attorney at law Om Lalla.
In Fenwick’s case, they said that having heard the representation
made on his behalf, they found the 10-match ban inconsistent with
the provisions for sentence under FIFA’s Disciplinary Code
Article 48.
“Accordingly, the sentence is hereby reduced to a suspension
of four consecutive matches.
“The committee also considered the imposition of the fine
to be harsh,” they said.
In the case of Gray, the committee could find no fault in law but
noted:
“The ban imposed by the Disciplinary Committee pursuant to
FIFA’s Disciplinary Code Article 49 of a suspension for six
matches has been reduced to a ban of three consecutive matches.
PFL president Larry Romany’s had said in the wake of the brawl
that the behaviour was “inexcusable and will not be tolerated
by the Pro League”.
W Connection manager David John Williams was unaware of the judgement
when contacted on Wednesday. When informed by TnT Mirror, his reaction
was “Hmmm …”
But he declined comment until getting official word or before his
club met to discuss the judgement and make a statement. |
