Fooled with b-Mobile’s buy one, get one free

By Joeline Thomas

AFTER risking a veritable riot to cash in on TSTT’s free phone offer, customers say they feel ripped off by the “b-Mobile scam”.

Two customers walked away from the Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago’s (TSTT) mobile services head office at Frederick Street, Port of Spain, where police had been called to keep order on Tuesday, fuming about being “ripped off”.

One woman confirmed having “paid more” but said she did not mind, given the ordeal.

Another customer, who preferred anonymity, told TnT Mirror he was not satisfied with the b-Mobile offer.

He revealed: “After we wait so long to get in TSTT, the offer was completely different to the advertised product.

“The pre-paid offer that was printed in the daily newspaper said that if you buy a particular phone for a specific price, you would have received another free.

“But when you get to the counter is a completely different story.

“I went to buy a phone worth $399 to get the other free and when I got there I had to pay $550.

“To me that was false advertising,” he ended.

The story was the same among the other customers who had earlier attempted to gain entry en masse at TSTT compound, causing tempers to flare.

Armed police officers were called out to maintain some level of control among those anxious to snap up the free phone offer.

TSTT had advertised price cuts on mobile phones along with a buy-one-get-one-free offer, in a clear salvo in the brewing cellphone war.

The presence of police seemed to further fuel the crowd’s anger.

Three officers accused a man waiting in line of using abusive language and pulled him away, to the opposite side of the road in front St. Mary’s College, where he was further reprimanded for his conduct.

Chaos broke out when officers were asked to let a few people into the TSTT building.

The policemen opened the doors too gradually to the crowd’s liking and soon found themselves being pushed aside by people rushing into the compound. The door was closed shortly thereafter and that was when the melee began.

People began hurling insults at the officers, a woman with her baby in arms cried out to the officers, “let me come in with my child, she sleeping and I in this line since seven this morning.”

Her cry was ignored as other folks in front of her continued bickering at the police.

In the height of the drama, a uniformed police officer was seen walking out of the building carrying a green b-Mobile plastic bag.

In the end, it was something of a victory for some but the majority walked away in disgust, feeling cheated and expressing resentment for TSTT.
