Vera Bhajan continues to excel
VERA Bhajan, the armless young woman who overcame all obstacles in her quest to secure a law degree, will soon be embarking on a new role – that of motivational speaker to young persons involved in crime.
This was announced by Minister of the People and Social Development Dr. Glenn Ramadharsingh at the Ministry’s Disability Affairs Unit Carnival concert last Monday at the auditorium of the Rudranath Capildeo Learning Resource Centre in Couva.
“Vera Bhajan was able to get a law degree without having hands and we have young people taking up guns to put at people’s head to take away money and goods from them.
“We have someone who has the discipline, endurance and willpower to get a law degree without having any hands.
“We are going to use Vera Bhajan to talk to young persons as to how they can utilise their God-given gifts to do so much more,” the minister said.
Speaking at the function, the minister also announced that they are beginning to recruit social ambassadors.
Dr. Ramadharsingh also announced that differently abled persons who wish to study or do a course can be eligible for a $5,000 scholarship from the Government.
He said special disability officers will be recruited by the ministry in two months to deal with persons with disability.
He said there has been an upsurge among disabled persons in communities in the past two years. The concert was the first of its kind and involved several entities from the disabled community.
Dr. Ramadharsingh said it was extremely fitting that persons with disabilities are included and encouraged to showcase their prodigious talents.
“Carnival offers yet another means through which we can ensure that the differently abled society is a viable part of the national community,” he said.
