Media Watch does not quite know what to make of the award presented by the Ministry of National Security to TnT Mirror publisher Maxie Cuffie at the Ministry’s media appreciation ceremony held on Friday February 3.
The inscription on the ‘award’, which was presented to all media houses, stated that it was in recognition of the work done to support the Ministry’s objectives. Media Watch has no problem if such an award was simply a thank you gesture for the independent reporting which the Mirror and some other media houses provide for the protection of our democracy.
Rather than an award, however, Media Watch believes the Ministry of National Security would be better off if would ensure a more equitable distribution of its advertising than presently obtains. The MNS is one of those agencies which have stopped advertising with the Mirror. And even the Police Service, which had begun to do so, has since stopped because of some perceived slight.
At least then, the Mirror would also be able to thank the MNS for supporting it in protecting and serving the democracy.
