Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack Warner, who is heading a campaign to bring back the death penalty, may end up “hanging” his own self as his colleagues in Cabinet are not giving him any support to bring back the hangman.

This is the view of some officials in the PP Government.

They claim that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar already has a “rope” dangling over Warner’s head as she wants to “hang” Jack for his negative comments about the Government and his responses about a rift between himself and her in the media.

A source said that at Cabinet meeting on Thursday Warner was told that he is politicising the hanging issue like Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley and any decision on the death penalty must be a collective agreement by Cabinet.

Warner, who has started his personal campaign called “A Fisherman’s Cry” to lobby for support for the hanging bill following the killings of three fishermen, was asked in Cabinet if he started the campaign because the men were from his Chaguanas West constituency.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had made it clear earlier this week that Warner was on his own with this venture as it was not Government policy.
At the Cabinet’s press briefing on Thursday, three Cabinet ministers distanced themselves from signing any petition to bring back the hangman, saying any decision on the death penalty must come from Cabinet.

Planning Minister Dr. Bhoe Tewarie told the media that he believes Warner is taking that initiative because he is the parliamentary representative for Chaguanas West.

Dr. Rowley has already indicated that the PNM would not support the hanging bill if it was brought back to the Parliament, saying it was fundamentally flawed.

The bill ended up being “hanged” in Parliament.
