ARE we heading for another State of Emergency?

Are we on the brink of another 1970-style happening that ended in chaos and confusion and everyone confined to their homes.

Certain elements of the society are today becoming just as brave, or even braver than they were in 1970.

Almost every month now, gunfire echoes throughout the streets, as the “cold war,” between the police and these reckless elements builds up.

The phone bombers, are causing widespread panic and losses of valuable man hours that could have been utilised for more production.

And there’s the spate of “organised crime,” that is receiving the blessings of revolutionary organisations throughout the nation.

The “New Beginning,” a paper which purports to be “a report on the day-to-day struggles of the revolutionary classes against the exploitation of man by man,” is calling on the public to join the anarchists of this nation, “in a fight to the finish.”

In an article on “Activity of Unemployeds,” it states:
“In 1970 the unemployeds were the ones in the vanguard of the struggle.
“But in 1970 also, those dreams stopped, visions faded, hopes died.
“There were some who ran one way, finding escape in drugs.
“Next were those who ran another way, finding and creating different form of employment for themselves.
“And thirdly, were those who did not run at all.
“These are the ones who, in spite of their heroic deeds, are called bandits, outlaws, gangsters and all sorts of dirty names by the government Press, the government radio, and television, and certain sectors of the government police force.
“They are not bandits.
“Bandits have never shown such humanity – such concern for human life.
“How many people are wounded or killed in armed robberies today?
“Bandits have never shown such respect for a kidnapped woman.
“The paper say she was set free. She was not even raped!”
And the “New Beginning continues in it’s heavy underground style:
“Bandits have never had the people on their side. How else can you hold out for so long?
“Eat how, sleep where?
“Why is the reward money still lying there?” asks the “New Beginning”.

If we can take the “New Beginning’s” report seriously, the bandits are getting help from both inside and outside this country. In recent months, quite a number of aliens have been arrested in underhand operations here.

Reports are that the lawbreaking elements are being supplied with arms from outside to execute their daring holdups and raids.

Only this week it was reported that a Mafia-type gang is now using a fashion shop in Port of Spain as head-quarters for their activities.

With the amount of robberies, daring hold-ups, shootouts, and other violent crimes plaguing this nation, the terrorists’ plan is clear.

They are bent on striking terror into the hearts of the law-abiding of this nation.

They are bent on creating fear and forcing the law-abiding to either be less productive or stop work, and bring this nation to a stand-still.

The revolutionaries will stop at nothing to achieve their ends, even if it means plunging this nation into another State of Emergency.
