Reports are that the Betting Levy Board (BLB) is experiencing financial problem as the taxes from some betting shops are slow in coming.
A source said it would appear that certain “bookies” may be putting a squeeze on the BLB.
The betting shops are supposed to submit the 10 percent betting tax every Wednesday but that is reportedly being delayed.
The Arima Race Club (ARC) is heavily dependent on the BLB to pay stakes and other expenses.
The BLB collects about $15 million a year in taxes from the betting shops, which is used to finance the racing industry.
Trade and Industry Minister Stephen Cadiz (under whose portfolio racing falls) has called on racing officials to try and make racing a viable sport within the next two years or government will stop the subsidy.
When TnT Mirror inquired from BLB chairman Kama Maharaj about the financial position of the board he did not disclose much information except to admit that that the betting shops are not up to date with their payments.
